Montalbera Agricultural Company was born at the beginning of the twentieth century in this territory among the municipalities of Grana, Castagnole Monferrato and Montemagno. In the mid-eighties, the Morando family (traditionally linked to viticulture for several generations) adopted an expansion policy, with the acquisition of neighboring lands and the direct planting of new vineyards, mainly apt to plant Ruchè. Today the company has a total extension of about 100 hectares and is surrounded by family vineyards arranged in a circular form in a single estate with an entirely hilly position, with different exposures and soils ranging from clayey to limestone, to silty. The vineyards cover six entire hills while in the valley floor there is space for the cultivation of the typical Piedmontese hazelnut. The vineyards vary in age from 7 to 30 years, the training system is the low guyot and every agricultural operation is carried out by hand. About 60% of the Ruchè DOCG of the entire appellation is our property. The other varieties planted are: Barbera d’Asti, Grignolino d’Asti, Monferrato Nebbiolo, Viognier, Chardonnay and other international varieties. The foundations of Montalbera’s production philosophy are accuracy and planning ability, interpretation and terroir. A thought that puts the fruit wine in a focal point, enhancing the great peculiarities of the vineyards, interpreting their characteristics and declining them in different ways, from steel to wood, from over-ripening to withering, so as to best enhance the multifaceted personality of each vine.
